Oklahoma Chapter of Americans for Prosperity Priaise Inhofe for Signing Pledge
By Senator Jim Inhofe
Hello, I'm Senator Jim Inhofe from Oklahoma, and I am proud to be one of the hundreds of lawmakers on all levels of government to sign the Americans for Prosperity "No Climate Tax Pledge." This pledge states clearly that climate change legislation should not be used to fund a dramatic expansion in the size and scope of government. As I add my name to the list, I am also here to call on all those who oppose the largest tax increase in American history to join me in signing the pledge by going online to http://www.noclimatetax.com/.
I have worked tirelessly over the past ten years to expose cap-and-tax for what it really is: the largest tax increase in American history. I began by leading the opposition against Kyoto in 1997 and have successfully led the fight against the cap-and-trade tax in 2003, 2005 and most recently in 2008. Today as American consumers continue to face tough economic times, the last thing Washington should be doing is raising the price of gas at the pumps, energy in our homes, and the cost of food in our grocery stores.
We have a lot to do in the coming months to defeat cap-and-trade again, and hopefully this time, for good.
In the House, back in June, Democratic leaders rammed through cap-and-tax legislation without members even having the chance to read the bill or to hear from their constituents. Of course, they know that the more we expose this bill as the massive tax that it is, the more the American people will reject it.
Therefore, it came as no surprise to me that immediately following the House vote, a firestorm of opposition arose from across the country. Senate Democrats quickly realized they would be unable to slam their bill through the Senate. So now they are focused on spreading pork-barrel favors far and wide to garner support for this tax. In other words, more business as usual in Washington.
We will not allow this to happen. Already, we have demonstrated that this bill's impact on climate is meaningless. The Waxman-Markey bill would force the United States to act unilaterally and impose drastic cuts on American businesses while nations like China and India would get a free pass. Even President Obama's EPA administrator Lisa Jackson admitted to me before a Senate Committee that this is an exercise in futility.
If we are going to defeat this massive tax increase and major expansion of the federal government, it is going to take the American public standing up and putting pressure on their elected officials. I hope you will join me and groups like Americans for Prosperity in getting the word out and making sure Washington knows just how bad this bill could be for American taxpayers.
